    Breaking it down... what are the speeds available on the internet and what do they mean?

    What is a Kbps?
  • Kilobytes per second, the 1's and 0's of the internet... to put it in perspective the average image/photo is around 200Kb, so a speed of 50Kbps will send this photo image in 4 seconds.

    What are Mbps?
  • Megabytes (or Megabits) per second, there are 1000Kb in 1Mb, therefore approximately 5 photos per Megabyte is a good way to put it in perspective. Our connection to the internet is an OC-3 connection, that's alot of bandwidth! Put basically, you could store a photo album of your family and our connection could potentially display it to a visitor across the world in less than a second. No kidding!

    What does OC stand for?
  • Optical Carrier, the backbone of the internet operates over fibre optic cables triggered by pulses at the speed of light.

    What is the difference between Symmetrical and Asymmetrical?
  • Symmetrical means that you will have the same bi-directional speed (upload is as fast or the same as download) which is great for medium-sized enterprises. Asymmetrical has different upload/download speed, and with hosting you want super fast upload speeds which are generally not available from conventional DSL/Cable internet service providers. The catch here is that most often they will give really fast download speeds but brutal upload speeds, but in general unless you're a heavy peer-to-peer (file sharing) internet user, the majority of your surfing will be downloading. T1 and up generally have a higher rate of reliability as they are most definitely used in real business applications.

    What is a Fractional T1?
    Full T1 service generally refers to a performance bandwidth of 1.54 Mbps in best-case scenario environmental conditions. Fractional T1 can be as little as 1/8 of top speeds as the channels are split up and shared between individual networks, so be careful if your business is purchasing a T1, the metrics are symmetrical vs. asymmetrical and full vs. fractional to ensure performance and reliability.
